The Complaint Process

At the Space Toy Co.

A Pay Equity Maintenance Program is in place at STC to ensure that pay equity questions or concerns can be addressed and resolved with a minimum of stress.

STC has an open-door policy on pay equity maintenance and welcomes participation, cooperation and suggestions on how to make the process better.

At the Pay Equity Commission

Employees can object to a plan or bring a complaint to the Commission by talking to a Client Services Representative (CSR) at 1-800-387-8813. The CSR completes the application over the phone, or sends out an application to complete.

The application form seeks basic information: for example, is it an objection to a posted plan or a complaint? There is space on the form for the applicant's and the employer's name, address and telephone number. An application can be withdrawn at any time, if an employee changes his or her mind.

An applicant can indicate on the form that they want to keep their name confidential. Or another person (called an "agent") can make the objection or complaint for an employee. Another alternative is for co-workers to make a group objection or complaint. A Review Officer is then assigned to investigate.

Employees can make a complaint at any time

Employees have the right and the responsibility to make their own decisions about pay equity. They can complain at any time:

  • about the manner in which pay equity was done;
  • that pay equity has not been done;
  • that pay equity is not being maintained, (for example, a male comparator job class received an increase and the matched female job class did not);
  • that changes in the workplace are such that the pay equity plans are no longer appropriate, (for example, significant changes to job duties, or a sale of a business);
  • that the pay equity plan that affects an employee's job does not comply with the Act;
  • that the pay equity plan was not carried out according to its terms;
  • that an employee has been fired, coerced, penalized, or harassed because of pay equity.
