The Work
Identifying the work
The first step for the Committee was to
identify aspects of work present in female and male job classes
- these elements could then form part of potential subfactors.
The second step for the Committee was to
organize those aspects of work that were seen to belong in the same
family: for example, all financial aspects were listed under what became
a subfactor of Responsibility - Responsibility for Financial Resources.
On the next page
Chart #1 on the next page is organized in this way:
In Column 1:
Aspects of work present in the jobs
at Toronto's Head Office are identified. (This list is not
exhaustive.)
From this list:
A shorter list of 10 subfactors was created.
These 10 subfactors are shown in Column 2.
In Column 2:
Ten subfactors are identified and now make up the
job comparison system.
Example:
In column 1, Budget responsibilities, Cash,
Cost accounting, Financial decisions, Accuracy and Accountability
are identified as elements of work that can be grouped under
the subfactor "Responsibility for Financial Resources".
This subfactor becomes one of the 10 for the whole system.
In Column 3:
The 4 factors - Skill, Effort, Responsibility and
Working conditions - are listed in this column.
Go to the next page to see how an extensive list
of work aspects was narrowed down to 10 subfactors.
