Welcome to the Space Toy Co. case study


This tool is designed to help you gain a better understanding of the pay equity process, by showing you how a fictitious private sector company established and is maintaining pay equity. Learn as you read through each step of the process, or use the worksheets provided to perform calculations.

The case study

The case study is divided into several sections:

  • To start - outlines the steps required in preparing for pay equity job comparisons.

  • Job evaluation - gives an overview of how to assign value (points) to male and female job classes.

  • Job-to-Job method of comparison - explains Job-to-Job, or direct comparison of male and female job classes, and shows comparison results.

  • Proportional Value method of comparison - explains Proportional Value (PV), or indirect comparison of male and female job classes, and shows comparison results.

  • Maintaining Pay Equity - outlines the principles of maintaining pay equity through examples and possible scenarios.

  • Complaints and objections - explains the process of filing a complaint or an objection to a pay equity plan, and the investigation process.

  • Tools - gives added information on topics like job information or terms of reference for a pay equity committee, and provides samples of these tools and blank forms you can use to write your own.
